Renovation

Historical overview | Renovation project
Museum in motion

The present museum building of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) dates from 1910 and despite its unique charm, the presentation of the permanent exhibits is outmoded and its infrastructure is obsolete. The last thorough renovation was almost 50 years ago!

  • RENOVATION PROJECT

The proposal for renovation was approved by the federal council of ministers in July 2006 and has been assigned to the Stéphane Beel Architectenbureau on September 11th, 2007. The preliminary design fully modernizes the museum, but in so far as possible retains the historical vista of the building.

Besides the renovation of the museum building, a master plan is also being developed with a long-term vision for the whole site.

  • RESTORATION OF THE DOME

Dome of the RMCAIn the field of architecture, the dome of the RMCA is of an exceptional technical and historical quality.

Since its construction nearly 100 years ago the dome had, contrary to the other parts of the roof, only needed little upkeep.
At first sight, the dome seemed to be in perfect condition but on a closer look the ravages of time had affected the roofing.
When, after a heavy storm in the spring of 2001 a decorative finishing element had come loose from its base and other cracks and rust formation had been noticed, the RMCA called upon the services of the Building Agency...

Restoration started on May 30th, 2005 and was finished in the spring of 2007.
