Colonial history

History of the colonial period and the period of decolonisation

***While the museum building will close its doors in late 2012 for
renovation, scientific research will continue at Tervuren.***

We study the history of Central Africa during the colonial period and the period of decolonisation. We take account of various aspects such as the consequences of the European presence in Africa and the actions of Africans in history.

colonialResearch activities:

  • history of explorations,
  • cultural, art and heritage history,
  • history of science and museum studies,
  • relationships between history, memory and contemporary creativity.

We carry out research using African scientific expertise notably in the DRC.

The archives and historical collections concerning colonisation are fundamental for those scientists interested in this period.  We encourage access and upgrading of this heritage for students and researchers through individual and group immersion programmes.

With the Belgian authorities and the education and culture department,   we are contributing to the teaching of history in advanced secondary and university education.

We work together with various disciplines. For example, with other museums for the content of exhibitions or geology for technical support with regard to border concerns in Central Africa.

The section was set up in 1910. It was mainly a centre of historical documentation. Its assignments have now expanded to include research.
