Cartography

***While the museum building will close its doors in late 2012 for
renovation, scientific research will continue at Tervuren.***

We are active in two fields:

• Scientific research using remote sensing (geological) and the use of digital sources of information,
• map production.

We use satellite and aerial images (RADAR, VIS/NIR)  and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to interpret various types of geological data (observations, geochemical levers and geophysical levers).

Moreover, we produce thematic maps (geological, topographic, etc.) mainly for the geology department and various research projects.  The maps combine images from remote sensing and terrestrial data from our research and archives.

The department has a graphic workshop, a map collection which mainly covers geology and a photo library which has aerial photographs of central Africa.

The catalogue of printed and digital maps is accessible to anyone or organisation that may be interested.

We have a major collection of satellite images, aerial photographs and mainly geological maps.
