8. Commemoration hall

p-herdenking

The Commemoration Hall was opened in 1934 and still fully reflects the old approach to colonial history.
It is a homage to the Belgian presence in Congo. Old maps, documents and travel items illustrate the ‘discovery’ of Africa.

The display cases and commemorative plaques show several stages of Belgian colonisation.

This hall is dated with regard to form as well as message. Here, colonial history is only envisaged from a Belgian point of view. The walls only mention the names of Belgians who died on Congolese soil. There is no mention of Congolese victims.
