UNCENSORED
Artists paint the 'Wall'
artists | practical info | activities
In anticipation of the museum’s renovation we placed a large perimeter fence, ‘the Wall', around the museum building.
Between 22 September and 1 October 2011 (the first 10 days of the UNCENSORED exhibition) 9 different artists turned ‘the Wall’ into a 70 metre long fresco. For this they draw inspiration from the UNCENSORED exhibition but also from facebook users who could have their status update transformed into a colourful design. In this way everyone could make a contribution to a colossal fresco around the museum.

The artists were coordinated by ZebrArt.
ZebrArt (www.zebrart.be) gets rid of the barriers which refugee artists with professional ambition encounter when trying to build up their artistic career in the Flemish cultural sector. It is a means of fighting cultural exclusion by giving refugee artists the same chances as Flemish artists who are just starting out.
ZebrArt functions as a multidisciplinary platform, an online database where refugee artists can come into contact with the cultural sector and with each other. But ZebrArt is more than just a website. ZebrArt gives the artists tailor-made advice and promotes them through the cultural sector, which can in its turn call on the services of ZebrArt.
ZebrArt wants to be both an advocate for refugee artists and a knowledge centre with a strong sensitising role in relation to the persecution of artists. So ZebrArt contributes to a consciousness that expresses more diversity and equality in the Flemish cultural sector.

YOUR COLOURFUL STATUS UPDATE ON THE PERIMETER FENCE
How did this colourful facebook campaign work?
Between 22 September 2pm and 1 October, 2011 2pm you had to place your wall post on www.facebook.com/AfricaMuseumTervuren
Your message was painted on the Wall around the museum. A small film of this was being made ('the making of') which you could then share with your friends via facebook, email etc.
Of course you can come and have a look at the mural next time you visit the museum!
