Salimata Kaboré was born in Burkina Faso in 1978. After several years spent in the Ivory Coast she completed her primary education in Ouagadougou.
In 1992 she moved to the Netherlands with her mother and stepfather. During her secondary school education at the Lycée Français de La Haye (in The Hague) she learnt how to ‘work with a pencil'. In 1995 Salimata moved to Belgium in order to pursue her studies. She obtained her Secondary School diploma in Brussels and then moved to Antwerp where she took evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts; during the day she followed a course in Communication Studies. Salimata returned to Brussels in 2001 where she completed her diploma in Communication Studies which she then followed up with a Master’s in Communication and Development Cooperation.
It was only in Europe that Salimata Kaboré discovered her talent for art. Strongly encouraged by her art teacher and art sculptor, Lina Hodoraoba, Salimata decided to participate in visual arts workshops at the weekend and this is where she also tried her hand at painting, stone carving, drawing... Even though she enjoys working with different media, she prefers painting, enriching her style with assorted personal techniques: sand, cement, grains, collages...
Her favourite themes are African women and tolerance. Her work is sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative, but always full of vibrant colours. Salimata Kaboré has already participated in more than ten exhibitions in Belgium and the Netherlands. She has won various European prizes and feels personally responsible for the recognition of African cultures.
