Temporary exhitbition
Mu.ZEE, Ostend
4 July 2015 - 3 January 2016

European Ghosts examines the representation of African art in the twentieth century. Which ideas underlie ‘our’ use of historical categories such as primitive art, ‘art nègre’, and ethnic art? What role did artists, writers, and researchers play, through their observations regarding art from Africa? What is our image of Africa nowadays, and what is the ethnographic museum’s role?
This exhibition features  forty-five works – among which masks, fetishes, textiles, and sculpted chairs – from our collections. The choices were based on early photographic observations and exhibitions from 1905-1935.
