During the renovation
Saying goodbye to the old museum
By the end of 2013 the renovation works will get underway. Mid 2013 the ‘old’ museum will close, and we plan to go out with a bang. The museum’s closure will be an activity-packed day and also a chance to look to the future.
After the museum is closed, we will begin the process of completely emptying the museum. The majority of the collections will be stored in the reserves. The entire move will take three months.
Museum seeks temporary accommodation
But the workings of the museum will not come to a complete standstill. We will be present in Belgium with a number of temporary travelling exhibitions and activities.
But also abroad the collections from Tervuren can be admired in some of the most prestigious museums in the world. In 2013 the Musée Dapper (Paris) is planning a major exhibition based around exhibits from Tervuren. A long term cooperation has also been concluded with the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix and the Museum for African Art in New York. In addition, a joint exhibition with the University of Florida is planned to mark 500 years of Africans in the United States.
What happens to the scientific institute?
The museum aspect makes up just 25 % of our activities. All of the institute’s research activities and services will continue in Tervuren.
