Overall objective
- To reconstruct the history of Sub-Saharan Africa - and in particular of Central Africa - by studying material cultures and the environment.
- Management of specialised collections, library and documentation.
- Cooperation with African institutes.
- Support for sustainable development, in particular through participation in the training of African researchers.
- Reception of researchers and scientific assistance for students.

Research activities
- Research on the interaction between man and the environment at the end of the Pleistocene in Central Africa, study of lithic material from excavations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Kenya.

- an important photographic library featuring field photographs (most of them taken in Central Africa). - can be consulted by appointment only (on working days from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.). - Archives
