Biological collection and data management

The museum has a collection of about 10 million zoological specimens, including:

  • 6,000,000 insects
  • 1,000,000 fishes
  • 300,000 spiders
  • 200,000 amphibians
  • 150,000 birds
  • 135,000 mammals
  • 41,000 reptiles
  • etc.

We manage the museum’s zoological collections, ensuring their:

  • development
  • documentation
  • accessibility
  • consultation
  • preservation.

Digitisation and online display of collections are among our priorities.

Our scientists also conduct research, in particular on:

  • taxonomy of millipedes and sea cucumbers
  • comparative brain anatomy of great apes
  • biogeography of reptiles and amphibians.
