Conservation and study of the music of sub-Saharan Africa
***While the museum building will close its doors mid-2013 for
renovation, scientific research will continue at Tervuren.***
We can rely on a collection of 36 000 music recordings and 8 600 musical instruments from sub-Saharan Africa. We use these collections in our research of African musical cultures, both urban and traditional.
For work in the field, we collaborate with scientists and trainees from these cultures. This collaboration is precious as they are closer to their own cultures and very much involved.
DEKKMMA (http://music.africamuseum.be) is an on line collection offering access to 36 000 sound extracts. It contains a descriptive file on the instruments used for these recordings.
We publish a series of music CDs in the framework of the Anthology of music of the DRC project. In addition, online publications give an account of our research projects in the DRC and the Ivory Coast.
