Traditional Music of the Kwese

Volume 6 in the series Anthologie de la musique congolaise - RDC

Traditional Music of the Kwese

It is within Angolan borders, in Lunda territory, area occupied by the Tshokwe, that the origins of the Kwese can be situated – in a place called "N'Gola", probably a distortion of Angola.

In fact, it was home to several ethnic groups, especially the Kwese, Pende, and Soonde.  After coming to Mashita-M'Banza, these groups separated: the Pende toward the Kwilu, the Soonde to the banks of the Lutshima, and the Kwese farther downstream. This mix explains the ties that unite these ethic groups to the present day.

Music
In collective singing, mixed ensembles appear to be preferred.
The importance of solo singing among the Kwese is most remarkable.
Only slightly less rich than that of their Pende and Tshokwe neighbours, the diversity of Kwese traditional musical instruments is no less interesting.
