3. Music of the Mangbetu
Volume 2 in the series Anthologie de la musique congolaise - RDC
The traditional music of the Mangbetu has been quite well preserved, despite periods of difficulty in the 20th century and the sometimes ferocious pillaging of this people's material culture. Nevertheless, the dynamics of traditional music in this region of Congo, where contacts between groups of different linguistic and cultural origins are intense, made it possible to develop, over a long period of time, an original music culture which is still lively today.
The recordings on this disc were made between 1984 and 1990 at different locations in the Mangbetu territory. The selection is intended to allow the listener to hear both court music and more popular music from the various sub-groups that belong to the Mangbetu cultural universe. It therefore includes not only the musicians from the Nangazizi court but also music from the Meje, the Mangbele, the Beyru and the Asua Pygmies.
