8.Traditional Music of the Tetela

Volume 8 in the series Anthologie de la musique congolaise - RDC

cover CD Tetala

The Tetela live in the middle of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the district of Sankuru, an area of 141,224 square km located in northern Kasai-Oriental (East Kasai) Province and with a population density of about four people per square kilometer.

The Tetela of the forest and their counterparts of the savanna, the Hamba, live in the territories of Lodja, Katako-Kombe, Lubefu, Lomela, part of Kole and the north of Lusambo. According to Luc de Heusch, the ethnonym ‘Tutela’ is disputed. In fact, the Tetela, like the Hamba, call themselves ‘Ankutshu a Membele’.

As the Tetela are a population composed of many communities that were and continue to be in close contact with the region’s other peoples, it is inevitable that their music and musical instruments are influenced by other cultures (Mongo, Kuba, Songye, Binji, Mputu, Luntu and Luba-Kasai).

The repertory of songs is inspired by various aspects of daily life, and all musical activity appears to be artistic expression intimately linked to the many circumstances of social life.
