15. Zoology hall

Zoology halls 13, 15 and 17 date from the 1960s – 1970s and form a unit. Here you can admire many African animals in lifelike dioramas that call up the natural habitat.

Bonobo

Many animals are endemic and can now only be found in DR Congo such as the okapi, bonobo, Congo peacock and water civet cat. Their further existence could be in danger if their biotope is threatened. This hall displays the bonobo as well as the Congo peacock, which were both ‘discovered’ in the museum.

Bonobos are the result of a series of evolutionary forces, typical of the Central African rainforest. The discovery of a special type of chimpanzee in the rainforest on the left bank of the River Congo is one of the most important zoological milestones of the 20th century.

The Congo peacock is the largest Galliform living in the African forest. It is a rare member of the pheasant family, related to the Asian peacock.

The Congo peacock lives in the lowland Congolese rainforest and is quite a rare bird.
