Currently, over 150,000 types of butterfly are known worldwide, 41,500 of which can be found in Sub-Saharan Africa.

4,000 of these types are papilionoidea, the others are moths and numerous types are yet to be discovered.
About ten new types of papilionoidea are discovered each year and many more moths.

The RMCA’s collection consists of about 500,000 butterflies, of which 1,800 holotypes. Holotypes are specimens that served for the description of a type; they in fact form the ‘definition’ of a variety.
