Five new fruit fly species discovered!

Marc De Meyer (Invertebrates service) and colleagues Maulid Mwatawala, Robert Copeland and Massimiliano Virgilio described five new fruit fly species from East and Southern Africa.

The tiny flies (only 4 to 5 mm long) belong to the Ceratitis genus and were described using morphological characters and DNA data.

The authors published their foundings in an article on 26 September 2016, in the European Journal of Taxonomy, a scientific, Open Access journal for descriptive taxonomy in zoology, entomology, botany, and palaeontology. The Royal Museum for Central Africa is one of the members of the consortium, along with 5 other European institutions.
