Eruption of the Nyamulagira volcano in the DR Congo

In the region of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Nyamulagira volcano started erupting on Sunday 6 November 2011 at 5.55pm local time. The flow of lava is heading North, mainly in the direction of the Virunga National Park, an UNESCO World Heritage site. The flow of lava is not currently endangering the local population.

Since 2005 François Kervyn and Benoît Smets, researchers at the RMCA (Cartography and Remote sensing section), have been studying Nyamulagira and its neighbour, the Nyiragongo, which is far more dangerous to the local population.
