Digitisation and dissemination of knowledge about biodiversity
***While the museum building will close its doors mid-2013 for
renovation, scientific research will continue at Tervuren.***
Our unit has a scientific and administrative support function. We mainly develop computer applications to exchange digital information relating to biodiversity and natural science collections.
Activities
- implementation and development of GIS (Geographic Information Systems),
- development of digital maps of species distribution,
- expertise on the management of physical and digital natural science collections,
- management of European projects.
African institutions also consult us to transfer their knowledge of biodiversity on dedicated internet sites. Furthermore, we can also develop mirror sites for data hosting.
In Belgium, we work together with the National Botanical Garden of Belgium, the Royal Natural Science Institute and Biodiversity Platform. At European level, we represent the museum at CETAF, TDWG and GBIF.
