Bamako Encounters. Kiripi Katembo & Abdoulaye Barry

For a sustainable world

(14 June - 26 August 2012)

The 9th edition of the Bamako Encounters African photography biennial will pay a visit to Belgium as part of the Summer of Photography 2012 (www.summerofphotography.be). The country’s major photography museums and institutions will participate in this festival on creative photography, organised by BOZAR.

From 14 June to 26 August 2012, the RMCA will exhibit two monographs: Un Regard by Kiripi Katembo, and Pêcheurs de nuit by Abdoulaye Barry. The Pan-African Photography exhibition, organised by BOZAR featuring the works of other photographers from the continent, will run at the same time at Tour & Taxis.

Un Regard

The Un regard series by Kiripi Katembo includes 19 images taken in the streets of Kinshasa. Puddles of water mirror a city where people, buildings, cars, mosquitoes, and rubbish live side by side. Katembo has managed to create a surprisingly poetic world this way. His photos are a plea for a cleaner, healthier environment.

Pêcheurs de nuit

The 25 photographs of Pêcheurs de nuit by Abdoulaye Barry are portraits of fishermen living on the banks of Lake Chad. Barry took night shots of faces and activities, giving them a veiled and mysterious look. These photographs are silent witnesses to the fragile existence of the fishermen and the dangers menacing their environment.
