Image number: 2271
Feature : desert pavement
Grouping : measuring techniques
Discipline : geomorphology
Year : 1999
Locality : hogback tree shelter, Sodmein
Country : Egypt
Region - tribe : Quseir
Physiographic region : Red Sea Mountains
Notice : This square of 1m² was 'cleaned' in 1996 and revisited in 1999. Within 3 years, rainwash did evacuate the fines and a new desert pavement of lag deposits is developing. Note that the dark patina coating of the original stone pavement (desert varnish), is still absent on the newly outcropping coarse fragments within the square. Traces of an important rill are visible in the square. Also traces of animal activity are present in the Red Sea desert, considered as one of the driest places on earth (3 mm annual rainfall).
