Image number: 2290
Feature : desert varnish
Grouping : weathering
Discipline : geomorphology
Year : 1999
Locality : Nakheil
Country : Egypt
Region - tribe : Quseir
Physiographic region : Red Sea Mountains
Notice : The gully wall in this alluvial fan shows that the gravels on the fan and the finer earth are brownish in color. On the alluvial fan, the free surface of the gravels shows a dark coating of Iron and manganese oxides. Because it takes many thousands of years for such a 'desert varnish' to develop, we can assume that the dark parts of alluvial fans are old landforms.
