The work of the painter Léon Dardenne

Title: The work of the painter Léon Dardenne
Producer: Léon Louis Auguste Edouard Dardenne (°1865 - †1912)
Theme: family/family life, dwelling/house
Legend: Léon Dardenne observed the headgear worn by both men and women. "There is an extraordinary collection of headdresses here, shaped into rounds, stripes, and wonderful tufts which I have sketched", he wrote (Family archives of the artist, notebook 1, 26-7-1898, p.30). In his work, Dardenne sometimes experienced difficulties to get people, especially women, to model for him. They avoided him the moment he opened his sketchbook. The artistic language of artists of the 19th century was alien to local peoples who did not immediately understand it as they did not have the tools to decode it. They often attributed certain powers to the artistic production of Europeans whether this was writing or portraits.
