Image number: 2268
Feature : desert pavement
Grouping : measuring techniques
Discipline : geomorphology
Year : 1999
Locality : hogback tree shelter, Sodmein
Country : Egypt
Region - tribe : Quseir
Physiographic region : Red Sea Mountains
Notice : This square of 1m² was 'cleaned' in 1996 and revisited in 1999. Within 3 years, rainwash did evacuate the fines and a new desert pavement of lag deposits is developing. Note that the dark patina coating of the original stone pavement, sometimes called 'desert varnish', is still absent on the newly outcropping coarse fragments within the square. This detail shows the effect of runoff-creep of coarse debris: the white coloured 'new' pavement migrates downslope over the edge of the square cleaned in 1996.
