Image number: 2295
Feature : dune
Grouping : aeolian deposits
Discipline : geomorphology
Year : 1999
Locality : Sodmein cave
Country : Egypt
Region - tribe : Quseir
Physiographic region : Red Sea Mountains
Notice : The stratified depostits in the cave have a mixed origin. The fine dust layers are aeolian deposits, blown in to fill partly an old rock shelter. In the deepest parts the ceiling still shows solutional forms and speleothems like the stalactite, visible. Wind blown dust layers alternate with rockfall, produced by spalling and flaking off of the ceilings more to the entrance. Belgian Middle Egypt Prehistoric Project KULeuven.
