Molecular biology
Joint Experimental Molecular Unit (JEMU)
***While the museum building will close its doors in late 2012 for
renovation, scientific research will continue at Tervuren.***
We are developing genetic identification techniques for zoological specimens on the basis of their DNA. This unique genetic code enables identification and exact comparison.
Activities include:
- extracting DNA from specimens,
- phylogeny reconstruction,
- assigning DNA barcodes to representative species.
We are developing methods for the collection and preservation of tissue of specimens collected on site especially with regard to downstream genetic analyses. We also advise other disciplines on the possibilities of doing genetic research.
The JEMU is an initiative of both the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the Royal Museum for Central Africa. JEMU is a member of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life.

The museum is closed on Mondays.
