Image number: 1996
Feature : rock shelter
Grouping : caves
Discipline : geomorphology
Year : 1995
Locality : Sodmein
Country : Egypt
Region - tribe : Quseir
Physiographic region : Desert-Red Sea Mountains
Notice : Sodmein cave is a cavity in Thebes limestone of Eocene age. The origin is karstic (solution), but its evolution is since a long time governed by physical breakdown of the rock: flaking, spalling off, splitting of rock. Sodmein cave is located to the left of a micro-graben (tectonics) in the limestone, and the location seems to be related to the existence of a number of fissures.
