Lemaire’s expedition was used to gather collections for various departments of the museum in Tervuren: anthropology and archaeology, ethnography, geology, zoology, etc. Mammals were caught with traps. The animals were skinned on the spot, after which the skin and sometimes also the skeleton were shipped to Belgium. Once they arrived at the museum, the collections were stored or stuffed to be exhibited.
