Theme: clothing/ornament, object, creation/making, hut, art and crafts, daily life
Photographer: Armand Joseph Oscar Hutereau (°1875 - †1914)
Place of production: Democratic Republic of the Congo > Province Orientale > Aruwimi & Uele > Uele > Bas-Uele
Legend: Hutereau collected a staggering 10,224 ethnographic objects during his expedition. The photographs tried to capture the original context in which the objects were made or used. ‘Pre-colonial’ Congo was mainly documented. Here you can see how fire was made the ‘traditional’ way, even though European matches were already widespread at the time.
Original legend: Indigènes faisant du feu.
