Legend: During his journey, photographer François Michel was extremely fascinated by iron smelting. The fact that this spectacular technical development occurred in Central Africa was clarified by an external influence. It indicated possible contacts with Europe since the colonisation of the Portuguese. A link between Central Africa and Egypt or Asia was also a possibility. However, later research indicated that Africa already knew about the art of iron smelting before the arrival of Europeans.
