Drums from Sub-Saharan Africa

Object type: musical instrument > membranophones > gobelet-shaped drum
Materials: leather, vegetal fibre, terra cotta / ceramic material
Legend: Open single-skinned cup-shaped drum on a base with a round pedestal. Several versions from the Maghreb area take up a separate place in the organological collection of membrane drums. What is remarkable in this type of drum is that the sound box is made of ceramic. The skin is tightened with plaited strings that are kept together by a thicker string at the bottom of the cup.
