Legend:
Sextant. A sea-faring instrument to measure the angle of an astre over the sky-line. The instrument is used to take bearings when this line is not visible, as in a forest. The sextant displayed is placed in a special case with its accessories. On the former, the label reads: “HMS Sextant taken across Africa 1874-1877”. Inside the lid, there is a photograph of someone holding a sextant.
This item belonged to the traveller Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904), and is now part of the Henry M. Stanley Collection of memorabilia, that his son Denzil M. Stanley donated to the Museum in 1954. Along with other objects, it records Stanley's travels in Africa, and the Victorian era.
