Legend: Peaked cap. Stanley found the usual helmet rather uncomfortable and designed his own tropical cap, made by J. White, at St. James, London, probably towards the end of the 1870’s. Stanley's adapted headgear was extremely light, with vents in the brim.
This item belonged to the traveller Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904), and is now part of the Henry M. Stanley Collection of Memorabilia, that his son Denzil M. Stanley donated to the Museum in 1954. Along with other objects, it records Stanley's travels in Africa, and the Victorian era.
