The "belle allure" [beautiful appearance] that Léon Dardenne regularly wrote about in his notes is present everywhere in a series of aquarelle portraits done in 1899 and 1900. Whether these were portraits of chiefs or guides, they all posed in the same way, dignified and somewhat introvert. Dardenne was trying to depict the finery of the people he painted.
