The work of the painter Léon Dardenne

Title: The work of the painter Léon Dardenne
Producer: Léon Louis Auguste Edouard Dardenne (°1865 - †1912)
Theme: hunting, portrait
Legend: The men are rather handsome and robust wrote Dardenne towards the end of 1899 (family archives of the artist, notebook 2, 2-12-1899, p.128). As was the case with many of his Belgian contemporaries in Congo Free State, he often referred to Greek, Roman or even biblical antiquity to describe the physique and manners of the men and women he met. It seems that the Europeans, totally lacking in cultural markers in the societies they were immersed in, used comparisons in their own cultural baggage which they had brought from their education and upbringing - classical antiquity, biblical history and ancient Egypt.
