This aquarelle drawing is an extract from the notebook of Charles Callewaert entitled "Types of Equatorial Africa". This notebook contains drawings of various members of staff employed by the CEHC. The African staff consisted of Krooboys, Cabindas, people from Zanzibar and Haoussas. The "portraits" by Charles Callewaert are a mixture of individual portraits with their names and an inventory of the communities encountered and classified by type. The notes of Callewaert reflect his prejudices against Africans. They are "Negros", they smell bad, etc. He did not hesitate to whip them. This was noted by his supervisor, Otto Lindner and the Englishman Auguste Sparhawk. In his notes, Callewaert mentions the number of lashes he had given - 6 dozen lashes, 60 lashes, etc.
