Political parties were banned after Mobutu’s coup on 24 November 1965. In order to raise awareness and mobilise the masses politically, the "Corps des volontaires de la République" was established by Paul-Henri Kabayidi and Gaston Nsengi-Biembe in December 1966. The abbreviation CVR corresponds also with their slogan: Conscience, Vigilance et Reconstruction.
