Legend:
Mobutu quickly recuperated prominent politicians from the First Republic. Vital Moanda introduced Mobutu to several traditional chiefs from the Kisangani region. Moanda had been a leading member of the Abako, former governor of the province of Congo Central in 1965 and Mobutu appointed him governor of the Eastern Province on 3 January 1967. He was arrested and imprisoned due to corruption six months later.
