Legend: This dwelling has all the characteristics of the late 19th century tropical bungalow: a construction raised off the ground that protects the rooms against ‘dangerous’ vapours that come up from the ground, a roof that transports the heated indoor air via a chimney, a veranda, also called a barza in colonial jargon, which enables outdoor living shielded from sun and rain. Curtains, bamboo blinds, etc. often gave this barza an improvised character.
