Legend: This Ptolemaic map, a woodcut also, and hand-coloured, comes from Willibald Pirckheimer’s 1535 edition of the ‘Geography’. The cartographer Laurent Fries had copied it from the one prepared in 1513 by the famous Martin Waldseemüller. Distinctly shown are the Mountains of the Moon and the two Ptolemaic lakes from which the Nile issues. The following image shows the Latin descriptive text on the verso of this map.
