GEO-GRAPHICS. A map of art practices in Africa, past and present
Dankzij deze nieuwe aanpak konden curatoren Anne-Marie Bouttiaux en Koyo Kouoh etnografische meesterwerken en hedendaagse kunst langs een continuüm plaatsen, waardoor er een dialoog ontstaat tussen de werken uit het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika en uit andere Belgische, zowel privé- als publieke, collecties, en het werk van de 8 kunstcentra die uitgekozen werden voor hun actieve rol in de ontwikkeling van het Afrikaanse kunstlandschap. Deze centra en de kunstenaars waarmee ze samenwerken, werpen een nieuw licht op de etnografische stukken, die we nu kunnen benaderen vanuit een meer stedelijk perspectief, ons beter bewust van hun hedendaagse uitdrukkingskracht.
De scenografie van David Adjaye en zijn foto's roepen de subtiele en intieme manieren op waarop culturele expressie en de stedelijke omgeving met elkaar verweven zijn. Uit deze ontmoeting van verschillende elementen ontstaat een nieuwe geschiedenis en cartografie van Afrika, die helemaal anders is.

Geo-graphics est basé sur un concept développé par le directeur artistique David Adjaye, où les œuvres d'art sont groupées selon leur zone géographique.
Cette nouvelle approche permet aux conservateurs Anne-Marie Bouttiaux and Koyo Kouoh de placer pièces maîtresses ethnographiques et œuvres d'art contemporain le long d'un continuum, créant par là un dialogue entre les pièces du Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale et celles provenant d'autres collections belges, publiques ou privées, et le travail de 8 centres artistiques sélectionnés pour le rôle actif qu'ils jouent dans le développement du paysage artistique africain. Ces centres et les artistes avec lesquels ils travaillent jettent un éclairage nouveau sur les pièces ethnographiques, que nous pouvons à présent approcher à travers une perspective plus urbaine et avec une conscience plus vive de leurs manifestations contemporaines.
La scénographie de David Adjaye et de ses photographes issus de capitales africaines suggère la façon subtile et intime dont s'entrecroisent production culturelle et environnement urbain. De la rencontre de ces éléments divers émerge une histoire et une cartographie nouvelle, et différente, de l'Afrique.

Geo-graphics is based on a concept developed by artistic director David Adjaye, in which the artworks are grouped according to their geographic zones. This novel approach allows curators Anne-Marie Bouttiaux and Koyo Kouoh to place ethnographic masterpieces and works of contemporary art along a continuum, thereby creating a dialogue between the pieces from the Royal Museum for Central Africa and from other Belgian collections, both public and private, and the work of the 8 art centres selected for the active role they are playing in the development of Africa's artistic landscape. These centres and the artists they work with throw new light on the ethnographic pieces, which we can now approach through a more urban perspective and with heightened awareness of their contemporary manifestations. David Adjaye's scenography and his photographs of African capitals suggest the subtle but intimate way's through which cultural output and the urban environment intertwine. What emerges from the meeting of these various elements is e new, and different, history and cartography of Africa.
