Haut-Katanga.

Sprawling over 132,425 km² to the borders of the south-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the province of Haut-Katanga brims with natural resources – among the richest in the country – and is also one of the most coveted, for its mineral deposits. Its capital Lubumbashi is the second-largest city in the DRC and lies at the heart of the province's administrative, economic, and cultural activities. A careful study of Haut-Katanga's distinctive characteristics is essential for understanding the political and economic realities that rocked the country in the past, as they still do today.
The first volume tackles the natural environment, the populations, the political and administrative organization, and some notable moments of history. It includes contributions discussing the creation of the Union minière and the migration of workers during Belgian colonization. More importantly, the volume retraces the Katanga secession as seen from the inside, with insightful analyses that go beyond the framework of the province alone.
The second volume explores the social and economic characteristics of the province, highlighting three fundamental themes: the urban, the rural, and the mining industry. Here we examine how the major social and economic issues emerge from a historical foundation characterized by continuities and breaks, and how the modern layout of its space came to be.
Through its analysis of Haut-Katanga, this two-volume work hopes to bring about a new reading of the country's history and the political and economic movements that are voiced within.
