The paper presents analysis of seismotectonic strain associated with the aftershocks of the 19 August 1992 M =7.3 Suusamyr earthquake. Surface rupturing produced by the main shock falls into the zone of maximum uniform strain. The earthquake caused reorientation of stress axes on the ends of the major rupture accompanied by rift·type aftershocks. The nearly horizontal N-S orientation of the principal P axis remained invariable and that of the T axis changed 2S years before the main shock and during the aftershock and post-aftershock activity, which is consistent with the trend of maximum regional compression.
