Armand Hutereau as an ethnomusicologist

Object type: musical instrument > membranophones > cylindrical-conical drum
Materials: wood, leather
Legend: Perhaps the reason westerners became so fascinated by the discipline and the variation of African drumming is because western drumming was always so mechanical and -literally- monotonous. The rhythm of African (skin) drums is referred to as the heartbeat of Africa. It is sometimes forgotten that all this fascinating and sometimes -for westerners- hard to follow rhythmic patterns originated from singing and even certain forms of spoken language.
