Armand Hutereau as an ethnomusicologist

Object type: musical instrument > idiophone > lamellophone
Materials: bamboo, wood
Legend: Lamellaphones are every inch African, made for education and enjoyment to be used by individual musicians solo or in a group. Their name is a bit of a problem though. The scientific term is not attractive in the least and ‘thumb piano’ causes confusion because it refers to western keyboard instruments that are not used in traditional African music. Belgian musicologists created the term ‘sanza’, based on a widely spread indigenous name, but this is also not generally accepted, nor are "likembe" and "mbira". This is an imported version and was therefore not made by the Zande.
