Léon Dardenne was preceded in the region by the German naturalist Paul Reichard (1855-1938). The latter, who was a member of the German committee of the International African Association, led an important expedition to Katanga and to the sources of the Lualaba together with Richard Böhm, from 1880 to 1884. He discovered Lake Moero long before Dardenne and also painted water-colours.
