In his travels across the bush, Léon Dardenne often complained of a lack of exoticism in the landscape of Katanga. This lack of exoticism led him to make comparisons with the work of European artists. His choice fell on landscape painters such as Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), Marie Collart (1842-1911) or Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) and symbolists such as Pierre Puvis de Chavanes (1824-1898) or Henri Ottevaere (1870-1944). All were sensitive to variations in atmosphere but none thought that full colour could be found in Africa: "I am going to make a study of Lualaba - all tawny hues, the blue river and a large tree like an apple tree in the foreground. The ponds of Auderghem on a sunny day in March (...)" (Family archive of the artist, notebook 2, 17-7-1899, p.90).
