The work of the painter Léon Dardenne

Title: The work of the painter Léon Dardenne
Producer: Léon Louis Auguste Edouard Dardenne (°1865 - †1912)
Theme: landscape
Legend: The Katanga bush sometimes displeased Léon Dardenne due to its monotony, especially when he accompanied the Lemaire expedition as far as Lake Dilolo. On other occasions, he was ecstatic about its beauty, notably Chilomba station and its surroundings where he only stayed for a short period. Dardenne found the abandoned park rather charming: "My domain is truly beautiful, the extensive plains covered in green grass, sometimes harsh, and the hills, covered in dry grasses, with superb trees. Very decorative trees in groups and towards evening, under moonlight, the effects of these abandoned parks are dreamlike. This is what I have been searching for, here the bush has the air of an immense abandoned park, which adds to the illusion here and there of large marshes surrounded by trees, which give the illusion of ponds" (Family archives of the artist, notebook 1, 17.11.1898, p.132, a copy of which is in the RMCA).
