The engineer Norbert Diderrich took part in the Delcommune expedition to Katanga (1890-1893). It inspired illustrations of the work of Alexandre Delcommune "Vingt années de Vie africaine. Récits de Voyages, d'Aventures et d'Exploration au Congo belge, 1874-1893" [Twenty years of African life. Accounts of the journeys, adventures and exploration of the Belgian Congo, 1874-1893] (II, Brussels, 1922, p.104). Paul Briart, another member of the Delcommune expedition, described a sculpture of a woman in his travel journal: "A Haoussa man brought us the most complete fetish that we have seen up till now: a seated woman with her legs extended, supporting a ball which she holds in both hands resting on her shin bones. This hollow ball is full of kaolin which the men use to powder their face and chest" (p.295-296). Diderrich also painted portraits of King Msiri and his wives and depicted ethnographic objects, fish and landscapes. He donated an album of reproductions to the RMCA.
