Nephew of the painter François Stroobant (1819-1916) and of Liévin Van de Velde (1850-1888), friend of the painter Gustave Vanaise (1854-1902), Raphaël Stroobant went to the Congo in 1892. He was taken on for the Ubangi-Bomu expedition led by Léon Hanolet. After staying at Yakoma station (1893), he resided with Sultan Bangasso before being appointed assistant to Lieutenant de la Kéthulle in Rafai. He set up four stations outside Bomu: Sandu, Darbaki, Dabago and Kuria. In 1894, the treaty between Congo Free State and France put an end to his presence in the north. He returned to Stanley Pool accompanied by his friend Joseph Inver. He died in Inkissi on 7 July, 1895. The RMCA has preserved several ethnographic sketches made by him.
